Chapter 14

A week later, the whole community seemed to be mourning the loss of Corey as everyone prepared for his memorial service. Although the official school communications had not included details of Corey's death, allowing parents to determine when and how to deliver the information to their own children, grief counselors had been available all week for both children and teachers.

On the day of the memorial, Angela and Grace had gone to Kate’s house. Kate had hired a babysitter for Sam and was more than happy to let Angela leave Grace with Sam and the babysitter for the day. Kate poured Angela a cup of coffee while the duo waited for the babysitter.

"Did you tell her what’s going on?" Kate asked in a whisper as their children watched TV in the next room.

"I don’t want her to know yet," Angela said, her mouth a tense line of resolve. "It’s amazing how the school has been able to keep it quiet from the class. What if I told her and then she said something to the whole class?"

"So what if she did?" Kate replied with mild exasperation. "They’re going to figure out that their friend is dead someday."

"It’s not our place to say something."

A hoarse laugh escaped Kate’s lips. "It’s exactly our place to say something. We’re the parents."

Angela frowned and felt a flush of embarrassment. "I mean it’s not our place to tell other people’s children. Did you really tell Sam?"

"George and I are going to – right after the funeral." Kate suddenly became very preoccupied with her own cup of coffee and Angela felt inflamed. It was ridiculous that Kate would be so forceful about the children needing to know while she hadn’t even told her own child yet.

In truth, Angela just didn’t know how to tell Grace about death. Would it worry her and make her afraid to go outside? What if she was traumatized somehow? Deep down, Angela thought it might just be best to ignore the situation. Someday she’d tell her daughter what happened, but it would be when she could be sure that Grace wouldn’t be permanently damaged by the situation. She tried hard to convince herself that this was compassionate parenting, although something dug at her in the back of her mind.

"Is George able to get off of work for..." Angela turned to make sure the children were still out of earshot. "The memorial service," she whispered.

"Yeah, but he’s going to meet us there. He has more flexibility to leave the office on Saturdays, but he’s such a workaholic." She rolled her eyes.

"The world of high-powered banking must be pretty stressful, huh?" Angela pried. She’d always been under the impression that banks had good hours for employees, but based on what Kate was always saying, it seemed like George was never home. She wondered for a moment if Kate could relate to being a single mother more than she gave her credit for.

Kate shrugged as the doorbell rang. "That must be Allie," she said as she moved towards the front door.
